Toyota is preparing to launch the bZ Woodland, which features more space and greater power than the bZ4X.

[PCauto] Toyota's foray into the pure electric vehicle market has often been viewed as cautious. Its first model, the bZ4X (now called simply ‘bZ’), failed to make a strong impact due to its indistinct character.
It is reported that Toyota is preparing to launch the bZ Woodland in 2026. Positioned above the current bZ, this second SUV in the series focuses squarely on outdoor and off-road use, with comprehensive upgrades in power, space, and practicality.

Compared to the current bZ, the bZ Woodland's body length has grown by nearly 15 cm, with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and a boot space of approximately 850 litres. Both passenger and cargo space now approach mid-size SUV standards, better suiting the practical demands of outdoor use.

It comes standard with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering 375 hp—a marked increase over the current bZ AWD's 338 hp. It also gains 211 mm of ground clearance, an X-Mode off-road setting, all-terrain tyres, and a 1,588 kg towing capacity—enhancements that significantly boost its off-road capability and broaden its usability.

Looking at past market feedback for the bZ series, key criticisms have consistently centred on power performance, interior space, off-road capability, and towing capacity.
The bZ Woodland addresses these criticisms directly through targeted design adjustments, following a clear and logical direction. These adjustments are not complicated, but at least indicate that Toyota is starting to address the usage gaps of the bZ series in specific markets.

Alongside these hardware improvements, the bZ Woodland's specification strategy is clearer. It adopts the NACS charging standard, with an official fast-charging time of 30 minutes from 10% to 80% state of charge. Inside, there is a 14-inch central touchscreen and the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assistance system. Overall, the configuration level matches its positioning without significant shortcomings.

However, the change in product direction has also brought new limitations. Without a significant increase in battery capacity, higher power output, larger body size, and the additional weight of off-road-related configurations will all impact energy consumption.
The official WLTP range is stated as 560 kilometres, though real-world range is likely to be lower. Practical real-world range is estimated to be around 418 km.
This gives it little competitive edge in today's electric SUV market, particularly for long-distance or frequent travel.
The price level faces similar challenges. The higher configuration specifications and functional orientation determine that the price of the bZ Woodland will inevitably be higher than the current bZ.

The bZ Woodland does help the bZ series move past its previous lack of presence.
Its sharper positioning and more focused product logic give Toyota a clearer sense of direction in the pure electric SUV segment.
However, at the same time, this clear positioning also limits its target audience. Consequently, its range and pricing target a niche audience with specific needs, lacking the broad appeal needed for high-volume sales. It serves more as a directional prototype for Toyota than a comprehensive solution to the bZ series' broader challenges.
