【PCauto】As Chinese automotive brands accelerate their global expansion, Malaysia, a key regional market, is witnessing a new wave of capacity upgrades and model introductions.
The BAIC Group plans to enter the Malaysian market with two models, the X55 and BJ40 Plus, supported by the capacity expansion plan of EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB)'s Melaka factory. The manufacturing plant has already completed its second-phase capacity upgrade and has also unveiled an even more ambitious blueprint for a third-phase expansion.

The capacity upgrade at EPMB's Melaka plant is significant
The second phase boosted annual production capacity from 6,000 to 30,000 units, partly driven by orders from MG Malaysia.
A highlight of this phase was the rollout of the first locally assembled (CKD) GWM Wey G9. Even more significant is the third-phase expansion plan: the plant will acquire an additional 8 acres of land and introduce in-house paint shop capabilities, with operations slated to begin in the third quarter of 2026. This move will result in a more complete production chain, further enhancing the level of localized manufacturing.
BAIC X55 to Compete Directly with Proton X70
A C-segment SUV, the BAIC X55 is planned to launch in two variants, with an estimated price range of RM 120,000 to RM 140,000.

It is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 188 horsepower and 305 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. These figures are competitive against some rivals in its class.

Its design is also distinctive: it is slightly larger than the Proton X70 and features a closed front grille with split headlights, conveying a futuristic, EV-inspired aesthetic.

In terms of market positioning, the BAIC X55 directly targets the Proton X70's 1.5-liter turbo variants, aiming to capture a share of the mainstream SUV market.
BAIC BJ40 Plus Targets the Hardcore Off-Road Segment
This ladder-frame SUV is expected to launch in a single variant, priced between RM 180,000 and RM 190,000.

Powertrain specifications include a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 224 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A part-time four-wheel-drive system enhances its off-road capability.
Visually, its side profile is reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler, and it is expected to compete primarily with the Great Wall Tank 300. For enthusiasts seeking a hardcore off-roader, it could present a new option.

BAIC Expected to Begin Mass Production in Malaysia Next Year
BAIC's market entry progress has faced challenges. Although the two models had their preview debut in Malaysia in 2024, little market news has followed. Rumors regarding the shutdown of its official social media page have fueled speculation about the brand's progress.
However, according to the latest plans, the X55 and BJ40 Plus are still scheduled to proceed, with mass production slated to commence in January 2026. This timeline may reflect adjustments in the supply chain or optimizations to market strategy.
It is noteworthy that the production capacity expansion at the EP manufacturing plant is not an isolated development. MG Malaysia also plans to begin trial production in February 2026, indicating that the plant will serve multiple Chinese brands moving forward. This multi-brand OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) model can help share costs but also demands greater production flexibility from the plant. Upon completion of the third-phase expansion, the plant's overall competitiveness is expected to be significantly enhanced.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?
Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Will the Toyota Yaris Cross come to Malaysia? If it comes, how much will it sell for?
The launch of Perodua Traz indicates that the market size of small SUVs in Malaysia has been expanding in recent years. However, the question naturally shifts back to Toyota. As a brand with the most comprehensive product line and a strong foundation in both the SUV and hybrid sectors, will Toyota choose the Yaris Cross to participate in this small SUV competition?

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?
Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.

BYD discloses four patents for variable flux permanent magnet synchronous motors, addressing the efficiency conflict of motors at high and low speeds in automobiles
Traditional permanent magnet synchronous motors can provide strong torque at low speeds, but on highways, the fixed rotor magnetic flux leads to increased back electromotive force, causing a sharp drop in efficiency. This long-standing contradiction in the industry has now found a new solution with the announcement of BYD's latest technology patent.
