UK Startup Longbow has Unveiled a Lightweight Electric Sports Car, with a Weight of Just 895 kg.

【PCauto】Electric vehicles (EVs) offer numerous advantages, but weight remains a significant challenge that the industry struggles to overcome. Typically, the weight of D-Segment fuel sedans ranges from 1,300 kg to 1,600 kg, as seen with models like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

In the EV sector, Tesla is known for its advanced weight control, yet even the lightest Model 3 weighs in at 1,760 kg, which still exceeds many comparable traditional fuel vehicles. Excessive weight not only affects handling performance but also increases energy consumption, reducing overall range.

In response, the UK startup Longbow has recently launched two lightweight electric sports cars—the Speedster (convertible) and the Roadster (coupe)—that demonstrate groundbreaking advancements in electric vehicle lightness. Officially, these models have established the world’s first category of Lightweight Electric Vehicle (LEV), with weights below 1,000 kg. The Speedster weighs only 895 kg, while the Roadster comes in at 995 kg, making them comparable to the ultra-light Mazda MX-5 990S (990 kg). Moreover, Longbow's Speedster and Roadster maintain electric vehicles' performance edge, with 0-100 km/h acceleration times of 3.5 seconds and 3.6 seconds respectively, and a range of approximately 442 km.

It is noteworthy that Longbow’s two core founders have significant experience, having been deeply involved in the development of the Tesla Roadster and holding executive roles at companies like Lucid Motors and BYD. This rich background provides a solid technical foundation for Longbow’s product development. In creating the Speedster and Roadster, the Longbow team prioritized simplicity and lightness, successfully achieving a balance between weight, performance, efficiency, and range through the use of advanced power systems.

In terms of design, both models boast smooth lines and dynamic shapes, seamlessly blending classic sports car elements with modern design principles. The Speedster features a unique convertible design, while the Roadster opts for a stylish hardtop configuration.

Pricing for the Speedster starts at £84,995, with a limited production run of 150 units, including 10 units of the special Luminary 1st Edition and 25 units of the Autograph Edition. The Roadster has a more accessible starting price of £64,995, which could attract a broader range of consumers to lightweight electric sports cars. Now, both new models are available for pre-orders.
