Is the Honda e:n1 Set for Official Launch at Motor Show 2025?

【PCauto】As the Motor Show 2025 in Thailand approaches, automotive enthusiasts are once again turning their attention to the new models poised for release by various brands. Among these, the rumors surrounding the Honda e:n1 have sparked widespread interest. This vehicle rolled off the production line in Thailand in 2023 and has been showcased on Honda's official website for over a year. Initially slated for release in Thailand in the first quarter of 2024, however, it remains absent from the market as of 2025.

The protracted arrival of the Honda e:n1 is particularly lagged amidst the fierce competition in the automotive market. In recent years, Southeast Asia's automotive industry, especially in the electric vehicle sector, has undergone significant changes. Thailand has established a leading position in the region by a mature electric vehicle manufacturing industry, witnessing a staggering 684.4% year-on-year increase in pure electric vehicle sales in 2023. Chinese brands have emerged as formidable players, capturing an impressive 80% share of the Thai market, while Japanese car brands have managed a mere 1%.

Clearly, Japanese automakers are faltering once again in the electric vehicle segment, echoing their previous struggles in China. Honda originally hoped that the e:n1 would signify its entry into the electric vehicle market with the help of the ongoing Chinese electric vehicle industry. However, its performance there has been underwhelming. Taking its sibling model, the Dongfeng Honda e:NS1, as a reference, it sold only 317 units in December 2024—disappointing figures for a country with a monthly vehicle sales capacity of 2 million. Its total sales for 2024 barely reached 2,737 units, marking a staggering decline of 74.09% compared to 2023.

The tepid reception of the Honda e:n1 in China reflects certain shortcomings in product competitiveness, including factors such as pricing, range, and configuration, which may not have sufficiently met consumer expectations.

Some critics argue that Honda took a lackadaisical approach in designing the e:n1; even two years ago, it would have struggled to attract consumers, let alone in today's market, especially given that the Southeast Asian electric vehicle landscape is largely dominated by Chinese brands.

If Honda chooses to persevere with the Honda e:n1 at Motor Show 2025 without implementing substantial improvements to the model, it will at least need to achieve pricing competitiveness. In light of the compelling price-performance offerings from Chinese brands, the Honda e:n1 must break through in cost control through strategies such as mass production and supply chain optimization to render its pricing more appealing.

Of course, there’s another possibility: Honda may have thoughtfully decided to cancel the launch of this vehicle. This is not without precedent; throughout the history of the automotive industry, numerous vehicle projects have been shelved due to market shifts or insufficient product competitiveness. However, for Honda, canceling the rollout of the Honda e:n1 would mean unrecoverable costs associated with prior research and development efforts, as well as production preparations. Furthermore, it could deliver a blow to the brand's image, particularly at a crucial stage in its electrification transformation, potentially raising doubts among consumers about Honda's electric strategy.
