[PCauto] Jaecoo, the high-end sub-brand under Chery, is accelerating its expansion into the Southeast Asian market. Following the establishment of J7 and J7 PHEV in Malaysia, the Jaecoo J5, positioned as a B-segment SUV, is planned to officially launch in 2026.

This model made its local debut as early as August 2025 and also appeared at the LahLahLand 2025 Lifestyle Expo in November, continuously attracting market attention.

As a smaller version of the Jaecoo J7, the J5 inherits the family's design and features while making adjustments targeted at a more specific market segment. The introduction of its fuel version will further diversify the product lineup of Omoda|Jaecoo in Malaysia.

Jaecoo J5: Dual Advantages in Space and Power
From the dimensions, the Jaecoo J5 has a significant advantage in wheelbase, with a length, width, and height of 4390mm, 1860mm, and 1650mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2620mm. This is 10mm longer than the Honda HR-V and 20mm longer than the Proton X50, meaning the rear legroom is likely more spacious. Additionally, the trunk volume also balances practicality, with a standard capacity of 480 liters that can be expanded to 1180 liters when the rear seats are folded in a 60:40 split, meeting the needs of family users for carrying large items.

From the perspective of power, the Jaecoo J5 is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, delivering a maximum power of 147 horsepower and a peak torque of 210 Nm. It is paired with a CVT gearbox and adopts a front-wheel-drive layout. Its performance parameters are comparable to mainstream models in the same class.

It is worth noting that an all-electric (EV) version of the J5 has already been launched in Indonesia with a claimed NEDC range of up to 461 km, but it is not yet clear whether the electric version will be introduced to the Malaysian market. Currently, the focus is on the fuel version, with plans for local assembly (CKD) to control costs.

Core Advantages of Jaecoo J5
In terms of configuration, the Jaecoo J5 is expected to feature a multi-link independent rear suspension, which is uncommon among vehicles in its class and provides a more stable handling experience. The interior is equipped with an 8-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 13.2-inch vertical infotainment screen, supporting CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. On the safety front, the Level 2.5 ADAS semi-autonomous driving system offers functions such as lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control for users.

In terms of design details, the J5 uses traditional door handles, which differs from the hidden pop-out door handles of the J7. This aligns more with market usage habits and might help reduce later maintenance costs.
Jaecoo J5's market positioning directly targets Proton X50 and Honda HR-V. Below is a comparison table of the vehicle dimensions:
| Jaecoo J5 (Planned) | Proton X50 (On Sale) | Honda HR-V (On Sale) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 4390mm | 4380mm | 4437mm |
| Width | 1860mm | 1795mm | 1790mm |
| Height | 1650mm | 1609mm | 1591mm |
| Wheelbase | 2620mm | 2600mm | 2610mm |
As a significant part of Chery's strategy for high-end vehicles, the Jaecoo J5 will fill the brand's gap in the B-segment conventional fuel SUV market and complement the J7 series.
However, for consumers, whether this model can strike a balance between price, configuration, and practicality is worth continuous attention.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?
Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Will the Toyota Yaris Cross come to Malaysia? If it comes, how much will it sell for?
The launch of Perodua Traz indicates that the market size of small SUVs in Malaysia has been expanding in recent years. However, the question naturally shifts back to Toyota. As a brand with the most comprehensive product line and a strong foundation in both the SUV and hybrid sectors, will Toyota choose the Yaris Cross to participate in this small SUV competition?

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?
Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.
