Malaysia's car market July review: Local brands lead, Japanese brands steadily secure their place!
Kevin WongSep 19, 2024, 12:25 PM
To evaluate a car brand's volume in the local market, the most direct reference data is the brand's local sales, as sales can directly reflect consumers' acceptance of the product. This article will use the market sales in July as an example to summarize the domestic car brands. The top two in terms of sales in Malaysia in July are all domestic brands, followed by Japanese car brands represented by Toyota, and luxury brands represented by Mercedes-Benz, and finally electric vehicle brands represented by BYD. The specific sales performance is shown in the chart.
1.Perodua
Perodua, also known as Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sendirian Berhad, is the largest car manufacturer in Malaysia. As a state-owned car brand in the country, it naturally receives strong support from the people and the government. Therefore, it is natural to be the first in terms of sales.
2.Proton
The company behind Proton is Proton Holdings Berhad, a Malaysian multinational automobile company. Proton was established on May 7, 1983, and was the only national low-cost car company until Perodua was established in 1993. In May 2017, DRB-HICOM announced plans to sell 49.9% of Proton's shares and 51% of Lotus's shares to the Chinese car manufacturer GEELY, so the current Proton has almost half of the control in GEELY's hands.
3.Toyota
Toyota's sales performance in the global market is very impressive, and its performance in Southeast Asia is even more outstanding. This is a car company that retains the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. Currently, it has many leading sales models in China, including Toyota vios, Toyota Hilux, and Toyota corolla corss.
4.Honda
Like Toyota, Honda is also a Japanese car manufacturer. Unlike Toyota's pursuit of economic practicality, Honda is more focused on the driving experience brought by the engine. It is said that buying a Honda car means "buying an engine and getting a car for free". This implies that Honda's engine technology and tuning are relatively excellent. At present, the best-selling Honda model in China is the Honda city.
5.Mazda
When it comes to the Mazda car brand, naturally we can't leave its persistent pursuit of the rotary engine. Under the global trend of electric vehicle development, Mazda insists on the research and development of the rotary engine. As the only car company in the world that develops and produces rotary engines, Mazda's rotary engine technology has always been a focus of attention. Although the rotary engine is no longer used in mass-produced models, it represents Mazda's innovative spirit in engine technology. At present, the best-selling Mazda model in China is the Mazda CX-5.
From the sales data, it can be seen that the domestic car market presents a diversified competition pattern, with domestic brands taking a leading position due to policy support and localization advantages; while Japanese brands win consumers' favor with their reliability, fuel economy and rich product lines. Luxury brands and electric vehicle brands have a relatively small market share, but they are also actively expanding their market.
