Starting from January 1, 2026, Malaysia will mandate external sound alert systems for all EVs

【PCauto】Starting from January 1, 2026, all electric vehicles (EVs), including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), sold in Malaysia will be required to be equipped with external sound alert systems. This regulation, issued by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), aims to address the road safety hazards posed by the silent characteristics of electric vehicles while in operation.

Electric vehicles, powered by electricity, generate considerably less noise compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. This low noise characteristic brings numerous benefits to urban environments, such as reduced noise pollution and improved living comfort. However, from a road safety perspective, this quiet feature introduces certain risks. Traditional gasoline vehicles produce engine noise during low-speed maneuvers or idling, serving as a natural warning for pedestrians. In contrast, electric vehicles lack this inherent alert mechanism, making it difficult for pedestrians to detect their presence due to the lowered levels of noise during low-speed driving, thereby increasing the risk of collisions. This risk is especially elevated for visually impaired, hearing-impaired, or distracted pedestrians and cyclists.

According to the new regulations, when vehicles travel at speeds of 20 km/h or less, the system will automatically emit warning sounds through external speakers, alerting nearby pedestrians and cyclists to the presence of the vehicle in their visually blind spots. The volume and frequency of the alert sound are scientifically designed to effectively capture the attention of those nearby without causing excessive noise pollution. MIROS has stated that the regulation is based on a comprehensive consideration of road safety, aiming to protect all road users.

Currently, some electric vehicles on the market are already equipped with similar external sound alert systems, but not all models feature this configuration. After the new regulation comes into effect, all BEVs, HEVs, and PHEVs sold in Malaysia must include this device as standard equipment; otherwise, they will not be able to pass certification or be sold. This rule will compel manufacturers to make the necessary adjustments to their products to comply with regulatory requirements.

The Malaysian government hopes that this initiative will further enhance road traffic safety and reduce accidents caused by the silent nature of electric vehicles. As electric vehicles gain popularity in the Malaysian market, concerns about road safety are increasingly being highlighted. The mandatory installation of external sound alert systems marks an important step for Malaysia in promoting the development of electric vehicles while ensuring road safety.
