PCautoOn April 27, 2025, the world’s largest car carrier, the "BYD SHENZHEN," departed from Taicang Port in Jiangsu, China, loaded with over 7,000 BYD electric vehicles bound for Brazil. This marks the ship's inaugural long-distance transport mission, which is significant for advancing BYD’s international development.

The "BYD SHENZHEN" is the fourth specialize transportation vessel for electrical vehicles from BYD, delivered in Yizheng, Jiangsu, on April 22. Spanning 219.9 meters in length and 37.7 meters in width, it features 16 decks and can accommodate 9,200 standard vehicle slots, making it the largest car carrier currently in operation in terms of capacity.

The design of the vessel fully considers the unique demands of transporting electric vehicles and adheres to stringent battery transport safety standards. Additionally, it employs LNG dual-fuel clean power, equipped with energy-efficient main engines and other eco-friendly equipment, meeting the latest environmental requirements set by the International Maritime Organization.

The voyage will take the ship from Taicang Port, traversing the Strait of Malacca, crossing the Indian and Atlantic Oceans before finally arriving in Brazil. The launch of this route represents a critical step in BYD’s internationalization strategy. BYD places great importance on the South American market, with its Brazilian factory projected to reach an annual production capacity of 150,000 units by the end of 2025. The vehicles being transported will directly bolster local market supplies.

According to first-quarter data from 2025, BYD's car carriers have successfully shipped over 25,000 electric vehicles overseas, with products reaching more than 100 countries and over 400 cities worldwide. This achievement is a result of BYD’s sustained investment in technology development, product quality enhancement, and market expansion over the years.

However, BYD has faced challenges during its globalization efforts. Currently, Brazilian ports hold an inventory of over 70,000 unsold Chinese electric vehicles, including BYD models, indicating limited market absorption capacity in South America. Although there is significant demand for BYD's electric vehicles in Brazil, issues such as weak market absorption, sales channel development, and consumer purchasing power could impact BYD's sales performance in the region.

While the large-scale transport undertaken by the "BYD SHENZHEN" will increase inventory, the key challenges for BYD that how to sell the vehicles and enhance its market share in this competitive environment still remain .
