【PCauto】On April 28, BYD held a groundbreaking ceremony for its passenger car factory in Cambodia, which is located within the Cambodia Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone. This facility marks Cambodia's first dedicated electric vehicle factory.

Covering an area of 12 hectares with a total investment of $32 million, the factory is expected to officially commence production in the fourth quarter of this year.

Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia stated in his address that the establishment of the BYD passenger car factory will help Cambodia transition towards a green, low-carbon economy, and that the Cambodian government will fully support the development of the electric vehicle industry.

The Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia further emphasized that the groundbreaking of the BYD factory represents a significant achievement in China-Cambodia economic and trade cooperation. This marks the first production project set up by a Chinese automotive brand in Cambodia, and is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the country's industrialization and strengthening the supply chain collaboration between China and Cambodia. It will also inject robust momentum into the development of the China-Cambodia "Industrial Development Corridor."

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD's Asia-Pacific Automotive Sales Division, stated that the passenger car factory in Cambodia will focus on the production of electric vehicles, with an expected annual capacity of 10,000 units, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025. The factory aims to continuously provide high-quality products to local customers, hoping to create a new era of electric vehicles powered by Chinese intelligence and Cambodian efficiency.

BYD's establishment in Cambodia will utilize a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly model, with the potential to upgrade to an IKD (In-Kit Assembly) model in the future. Situated near a deep-water port, the factory is strategically positioned to serve the ASEAN market.

Currently, there are nine automobile assembly plants in Cambodia, while BYD is distinctive for the first enterprise focused on electric vehicles. This factory will not only bring new vitality to the local industry but also improve the skills of local workers by subsequent training, contributing to Cambodia's industrial development and economic transformation.

As the fourth-quarter production milestone approaches, BYD's performance in Cambodia and the wider ASEAN electric vehicle market is eagerly anticipated.
