GR becomes Toyota's fifth independent brand, originating from the track's independent performance

[PCauto] Toyota's high-performance sports division, Gazoo Racing (GR), has become the fifth independent brand. This is not simply an expansion of the product line, but a strategic reflection of the systematic operation of its racing technology and performance genes, which have been refined for nearly two decades.

GR has developed from a race team led by senior management to a strong brand with independent product lines and proprietary R&D standards. This development path provides a viable direction for traditional automotive giants to shape and deliver driving pleasure in the era of electrification.

GR uses racing technology to build better production cars

The origins of GR can be traced back to 2007, when Toyota's then-Vice President Akio Toyoda formed Team Gazoo privately to participate in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in Germany. This unofficial and unforgettable experience allowed Akio Toyoda to realize the importance of extreme track conditions for vehicle development.

Since then, building better cars through motorsport has become GR's core direction.Unlike many brands that separate racing divisions from production R&D, GR has always adhered to the philosophy of "road performance begins on the track." The brand fine-tunes its all-wheel-drive systems and body rigidity under the challenging conditions of the World Rally Championship (WRC) and optimizes chassis tuning and heat management through lap time challenges at the Nürburgring's Nordschleife track.

The technical expertise gained from extreme race tracks has not only produced widely recognized hardcore performance vehicles like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, but the accumulated experience has also continuously boosted Toyota's mainstream models, enhancing core aspects such as handling stability and vehicle responsiveness.

The expansion of GR is also a result of the unprecedented resource emphasis placed within Toyota's "racing-development-mass production" closed-loop model, which holds a key strategic position.

GR Occupying the High-Performance Market

The positioning of GR is clear. It essentially targets the high-performance and driving pleasure segment precisely between the mass-market Toyota brand and the luxury Lexus brand. The purpose is to attract users who seek a driving experience beyond that of ordinary family vehicles.

Therefore, GR benefits from the cost control and reliability foundation brought by Toyota's massive economies of scale while successfully shedding the mainstream brand's inherent practical image through its pure track-focused image, establishing a unique model.

At the product level, GR has already established a comprehensive system covering the entire range of GR models, including GR SPORT, GR PARTS, as well as GR Yaris and GR Supra. For the future, Toyota has clarified its development direction:

  • On one hand, continue to explore the potential of fuel-powered performance cars, exemplified by the launch of the GR GT3 Concept in 2022, showcasing the brand's layout and planning in the field of top-tier racing;
  • On the other hand, proactively promote the transition to electrification, with the FT-Se electric sports concept car demonstrating the driving pleasure of electric sports vehicles.

The dynamic performance tuning of GR achieves lasting competitiveness

The systematic success of GR provides a key example for the global automobile industry, especially for traditional brands undergoing the impact of electrification.

In the era of electric vehicles, differentiation in powertrains is diminishing, and the definition of driving pleasure is shifting from engine sound and shifting rhythm to deeper fields, such as chassis integration, torque control, and the sense of connection between driver and vehicle.

What GR has accumulated through long-term participation in motorsport is precisely a profound understanding of vehicle dynamics and tuning capabilities. This ability, which does not rely on the form of power, is its lasting competitiveness across technological pathways.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?

Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.
