Tesla's Texas factory was caught testing vehicles, suspected to be Model Q

【PCauto】Recently, a blogger has captured aerial footage of a Tesla camouflage test vehicle over the Tesla Gigafactory in Texas via drone, igniting widespread speculation. This discovery is particularly intriguing, as the new Model Y is already available for public pre-order, rendering camouflage superfluous. It has been conjectured that the vehicle in question may represent Tesla's forthcoming most affordable model, potentially named the Model 2 or Model Q (internally designated Project Redwood).

Concerning the enigmatic Model Q, Elon Musk has previously indicated that it will be a "smaller" iteration of Model Y, distinguishing itself by lacking a hatchback design. The visual characteristics of the camouflaged vehicle observed in the drone footage appear to align with this description. Should this vehicle indeed be Model Q, its significance is substantial. While Tesla has made remarkable strides in the electric vehicle landscape, its foothold in the entry-level market has been relatively limited. A successful launch of Model Q would undeniably facilitate Tesla’s expansion into the mass market, addressing a notable gap in the affordable vehicle segment.

Available online information suggests that Model Q may boast promising battery and range configurations. It is speculated to potentially offer two lithium iron phosphate battery options: 53 kWh and 75 kWh, with a maximum range of up to 500 kilometers under EPA testing standards. Such range performance would adequately cater to daily commuting and short-distance travel.

Moreover, a series of developments at the factory further support the anticipation surrounding Model Q's arrival. Recent drone footage reveals that the Tesla Gigafactory in Texas is undergoing significant production line construction and expansion of its paint shop. Generally, such expansions in production capacity indicate that new products are imminent. Additionally, a blogger disclosed earlier this month that Tesla's all-new entry-level electric vehicle is slated for unveiling on June 25 this year, with an expected price point below $30,000.

If Model Q is launched at such an accessible price, its potential impact on the entire new energy vehicle market cannot be understated. Several Chinese brands, such as BYD and AION, have excelled in the Southeast Asian market. Given Tesla’s global recognition and brand influence, the introduction of Model Q will undoubtedly intensify competition within this niche sector. For Tesla itself, if Model Q achieves successful market penetration, an annual sales growth target of 20% to 30% may well be within reach.

Nevertheless, much of the information pertaining to Model Q remains speculative and based on leaks. Tesla has yet to issue an official response, leaving the true product specifications, launch timeline, and pricing undisclosed. However, it is undeniable that the sighting of this camouflaged test vehicle at the Texas factory has successfully ignited the curiosity of consumers and industry experts alike, with eager anticipation building for Tesla to unveil Model Q and elucidate its mysteries.
