BYD Sealion 5 DM-i officially launches in the Australian market, starting at a price of RM93,000 to capture more market share

[PCauto] Amidst a backdrop of continuously declining electric vehicle (EV) prices, BYD has once again taken proactive steps. The official pricing announcement for the Sealion 5 quickly sparked market discussion, marking BYD's entry into the still-growing PHEV segment at a price point lower than its main competitors.
- BYD Sealion 5 DM-i Essential: AUD 33,990 (approximately RM 93,000)
- BYD Sealion 5 DM-i Premium: AUD 37,990 (approximately RM 103,000)
This price range directly overlaps with many mainstream fuel-powered C-Segment SUVs.
Positioned as BYD's most entry-level PHEV SUV, the Sealion 5 is also deliberately placed below the pricier Sealion 6, which starts at nearly AUD 43,000 (approximately RM 117,000).
With a more affordable pricing strategy, BYD clearly aims to attract two types of consumers: first, families who are hesitant about pure EVs but open to electrification; second, fleet and corporate clients focused on cost-effectiveness.

Sealion 5 DM-i Offers a Range of Over 1,000 km
The Sealion 5 is equipped with BYD's latest DM-i 4.0 plug-in hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5L gasoline engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 156 kW.
The Essential variant is equipped with a 12.9 kWh LFP battery, while the Premium variant receives an 18.3 kWh battery, utilizing BYD's signature Blade Battery.
Under the NEDC test cycle, the all-electric driving range is rated at 71 km for the Essential variant and 100 km for the Premium variant. With the assistance of a 52-liter fuel tank, the theoretical combined range of the Premium model exceeds 1,000 km.

These figures underscore the core appeal of PHEVs. In urban commuting scenarios, the vehicle can primarily rely on electric power, reducing fuel consumption and usage costs. Meanwhile, for long-distance travel, there is no need to depend entirely on charging facilities.
This "electricity-first, fuel-as-backup" approach proves particularly practical for markets with uneven infrastructure and varied driving scenarios.
The official combined fuel consumption is as low as1.2–1.3 L/100 km. While this is an ideal test value, it clearly conveys an emphasis on efficiency.

Sealion 5 Configuration Overview
In terms of body dimensions, the Sealion 5 measures 4,738 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,712 mm, making it a standard C-segment SUV. The difference with the Sealion 6 is only 37 mm.

The five-seat, five-door configuration does not emphasize sportiness but leans toward family use, prioritizing space and daily convenience.
The interior and equipment also follow a practical route, featuring a standard digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch central control screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, and V2L external power supply function.

The Premium model further enhances comfort and technological appeal with features such as a 360-degree surround-view camera, power-adjustable front seats, wireless phone charging, and a higher-specification audio system.
In terms of safety, both models are equipped with seven airbags and a comprehensive suite of active driver-assistance systems, including AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking), ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot detection, meeting the expectations for a mainstream family SUV today.
BYD Aims to Expand Market Share with the Sealion 5 DM-i
From a broader market perspective, the launch of the Sealion 5 is not merely a new model introduction but part of BYD's strategy to expand its market presence.
Previously, models such as the Dolphin, Atto 3, and the more entry-level Atto 1 and Atto 2 have progressively lowered the price threshold in the pure electric vehicle market. Now, with the addition of this aggressively priced PHEV option, BYD simultaneously caters to transitional consumers who are open to electrification but not yet ready for a fully electric vehicle.
BYD Australia's Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Collins, underscored this strategy, stating that the Sealion 5's mission is to make electrified vehicles accessible to more families affordably, rather than catering solely to early adopters.
